Built in the 1750s by Jean David Henchoz, a wealthy farmer, notary and judge, its cellars could hold 600 cheeses. It is thought to be the largest wooden house in Europe In the 19th century, when used as an hotel it was patronised by a distinguished clientele that included Victor Hugo. In 1977 the Grand Chalet was bought by the painter Balthus (1908-2001).
