Earlier in 1738 the park had been acquired by Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough for hunting until in 1756 he commissioned Stiff Leadbetter to build the present house finished in 1760. His successor George, 4th Duke of Marlborough commissioned Lancelot 'Capability' Brown to landscape the grounds.
