VAN MIEREVELT (1567-1641) PORTRAIT OF FREDERIC-MAURICE, DUC DE BOUILLON bust length in armour and lace-edged collar, signed and dated centre left Ao. 1626./M Mirerevelt, oil on panel, 63 x 52cm, carved and gilded frame, the reverse with old inscription The Earl of Craven Combe Abbey and with black and gilt Coombe Abbey Inventory No 307Provenance: By descent to Cornelia, Countess of Craven, her deceased's sale, Sotheby's, 27 November 1968, lot 94. Dr D W S Sheldon of Repton, Derbyshire from whom acquired by the present vendor, in 1970.Literature: Craven (W), Catalogue of the Pictures at Combe Abbey Warwickshire, privately published 1866, No 307.Frédéric-Maurice de La Tour d'Auvergne, Duc de Bouillon, Prince de Sedan (1605-1652), son of Duc Henri (1555-1623) and Elisabeth of Orange-Nassau (1577-1642). A General in the French army, he was the elder brother of the renowned Turenne (1611-1675) with whom he was a leader of the Fronde des Nobles from 1650. He married Eleonora Catharina Febronis, by whom he had five sons and four daughters.
