NOTTINGHAM. THE 19TH CENTURY DEER BOOK OF WOLLATON PARK (1839-1848)detailing the buck, 'fullheads' and doe venison taken 'to the house use' or given by Lord Middleton to others, including the tenantry of Wollaton, Trowell, Cossall, Leake, Lenton & Radford and Broxtowe & Aspley, the amount (quarter, half or whole) and the recipient's residence, 1839-48 Seasons with yearly summaries (except 1839) compiled by Isaac Wibberley, Head Gamekeeper, in ink on 41ff (some v. blank) 32 x 20cm (watermarked T EDMONDS 1837) followed by several p.s of domestic accounts, remedies, etc (1860's) contemporary quarter calf with subsequent family ownership inscriptions The long lists of names who received the deer, often more than once, include Lord Middleton's neighbours Colonel Wildman (Newstead Abbey) Sir Jukes Clifton (Clifton Hall) Sir H Wilmot (Chaddesden Hall) T W Edge (Strelley Hall) J W Sherwin (Bramcote Hills) Gregory Gregory (Harlaxton Manor) and Mrs Sherbrooke (Oxton), the 'town' such as the judiciary and the Sheriff of Nottingham, the Barracks, the racecourse and hospital, Ichabod Wright (the banker, Mapperley Hall) the mayor of Newark, the Archbishop of York and Bishop of Lincoln, Officers of the Royal Navy and many others at a considerable distance. Over the eight Seasons recorded, a total of 71.75 deer were supplied 'To his Lordship's kitchen' at Wollaton Hall and 562.25 were given away.
