AMERICANA. AN INTERESTING NORTH AMERICAN PAINTED with emblems including, a drum, trumpet and banner inscribed GILMORE'S BAND between flags on a scarlet ground, with skins, cords and leather ties, 28cm h, 39cm diamProvenance: Acquired in Scotland by the present local vendor in the 20th c.If as seems probable this drum belonged to an original member of the Gilmore Band it is of interest for its association with the Bands founder, Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore (1829-1892). He was the Irish born American composer and band master who rose to fame when serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war the concerts he arranged featuring colossal orchestras and massed bands attracted audiences of up to 120,000. He subsequently took his band on tours of Europe which may explain how the present drum was discovered in Scotland.
