ENGLISH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN bust length in ruff and black hat, charged with a shield of arms and date '1611' upper left, oil on canvas, 74 x 63cm, unframedPlease note: An old label on the stretcher possibly a cutting from a catalouge, reads 'John Newman of ...wood Essex'The arms are those of Newman, or, a fesse indented gules between three eagles displayed, sable and were granted in 1611 to George Newman (c1562-1627) of St Margaret's Canterbury and Doctor's Commons, who had issue (4 sons and 4 daughters).
