AN ENGLISH ROSEWOOD 7 FOOT GRAND PIANO BY T TOMKISON, NO 1588, C1835 the nameboard inscribed PATENT Thos Tomkison Dean Street Soho maker to His Majesty, on reeded tapering turned legs with brass castors, brass lock shooting three bolts, stamped TURNERProvenance: (By repute) a female acquaintance of David Lloyd George, OM, PC (1863-1945) The Prime Minster is said to have played the piano when he visited.Thomas Tomkison (d 1853) traded from 55-57 Dean Street, Soho from 1799 until 1851. He enjoyed royal patronage, supplying the Prince Regent (later George IV) with several instruments, including a very fine ormolu mounted and brass inlaid grand piano for Brighton Pavilion, c1821. The lyre pedal frame of that piano is identical to that of the present example.
