BALLETS RUSSE. A FRENCH GLASS PICTURE OF A PEACOCK

BALLETS RUSSE. A FRENCH GLASS PICTURE OF A PEACOCK, C1912 paint, paper and metal foil collage under glass, 24.5 x 35cm in the original early 20th c black painted softwood frameProvenance: Tamara Karsarina (1885-1978) from who acquired in 1944 by John Carr Doughty (d1998).According to John Carr Doughty's typed labels on the card backing, this exotic collage - sous-verre was given to Karsarina by Diaghilev as a memento of Le Dieu Bleu. In the one act ballet, which was created for Nijinsky and was staged in Paris in May 1912 and London the following year, she was one of the three ballerinas. It was choreographed by Michel Fokine and the sets and costume were designed by Leon Bakst. Karsavina appears to have told Doughty that the picture was of 'The Muscovite Peacock' from which it might be inferred that it was in fact made, and possibly also give to her, by Bakst, rather a Diaghilev.
