THOMAS MARTIN RANDALL (1786-1859) STUDY OF A ROSE signed verso with initials (in ink T.M.R.) and with faint pencil inscription W So...ry, watercolour, octagonal, 33 x 27cmThere are several pencil studies of foliage on the reverse.Provenance: The artist's widow Louisa (Shipley, nee West, d1847) thence by descent in the West family to Mrs J Launder, from whom acquired by the present vendor, c1980.Exhibited: On loan to Clive House Museum Shrewsbury until 1997.Illustrated: Twitchett (J), Derby Porcelain 1980, col plt 42. Literature: Edmundson (R S), Thomas Martin Randall; China Decorator and Manufacturer, NCS Journal 1993, p26.This superb watercolour is of a scale and quality such that it may well have been intended for demonstration or copying in the same way as the famous Derby 'Prentice Plate' by William 'Quake'r Pegg. It is also of the utmost rarity, being signed.
