†GEOFFREY HAMILTON RHOADES (1898-1980) STUDY FOR ANACREON'S TOMB signed, pencil and sepia wash, 24.5 x 32cmGeoffrey Rhoades studied at the Slade School under Henry Tonks, following service in the Mercentile Marine during World War One. Tonks apparently told him on leaving the Slade "You have something I haven't - imagination." In the 1920s Rhoades executed murals at Stoke Rochford House, Lincolnshire. The present drawing is a study for a linocut of 1950.
