AN ENGLISH BRASS SIMPLE MICROSCOPE, GEORGE LINDSAY, LONDON, NO 16, DATED 1742  with hinged, fretted bracket, hinged stage, focusing lever and on the edge of the base plate a silver divided strip numbered 1-7 and secured by two screws, a slide with objectives 2, 3 & 4 behind the eye-cup, the front plate with silvered tablet engraved Geo Lindsay inv & fec, stamped with the serial number 16 behind the eyepiece and under the base plate 1742Lindsay's patent (No 588) for a 'Portable Microscope' was granted on 17 February 1743, the apparent discrepancy in the date being due to the old style calendar.
