GERMAN SCHOOL

GERMAN SCHOOL, 1856 THE EYE PATIENT OF FRIEDRICH HERMAN DE LEUW signed with a monogram, dated and inscribed Grafrath, pen and ink, mounted facing a portrait photograph (albumen print) of F H de Leuw in contemporary tooled red morocco case, 21 x 24cm, 26.5 x 46.4cm overallSuch was his renown in treating disease of the eye that by the 1840s the German ophthalmologist Friedrich Hermann de Leuw (1792-1861) had gained an international reputation. As is clearly evident from this interesting and accomplished depiction of the interior of his consulting rooms, his expertise was much in demand, putting a considerable strain on the hotel and facilities of the small town Grafrath outside Solingen. His more distinguished patients included King George V of Hannover (1819-1878). One of de Leuw's sons was the landscape painter Friedrich August de Leuw (1817-1888).
