A GROUP OF MANUSCRIPT LECTURES AND ESSAYS BY THE NOTTINGHAM SOLICITOR AND COUNSELLOR HUGH BROWNE (1834-1914) on a variety of subjects including The Position & Influence of Woman in Society (1864). The Natural History of Woman, An Ode to his Wife [Selina Paine] by 'Guy Dart' [his pseudonym] and a skit upon the nomination of the Mayor of Nottingham [Richard Birkin] November 1855 with other items including the judgment in the case of Mara v. Browne, 1895 (which Browne subsequently overturned on appeal to the House of Lords, with costs), a caricature of Browne in a boat on the River Trent opposite Wilford Church, offprints of his several obituaries and other documentsIn the civic life of Victorian Nottingham Hugh Browne was, according to one of his obiturists, one of several men of his generation who were "of much more than ordinary literary power." He was the son of Michael Browne (see lots 1163 and 1164)
