CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH ZINCKE (1683/4-1767) ISAAC BORROW OF DERBY enamel

CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH ZINCKE (1683/4-1767) ISAAC BORROW OF DERBY enamel, 33 x 27mm, giltmetal frame, the reverse engraved with the arms of Borrow impaling BurtonIsaac Borrow was born at Hulland Hall, Derbyshire in 1673. The Borrow family had long been established at Gotham and Thrumpton near Nottingham. Borrow married firstly, in St Paul's Cathedral, London, Mary Tempest (1681-1702) and secondly in 1708 Honor, daughter of Thomas Burton of Putney (d 1710) at All Hallows Church Barking. The present miniature may therefore be a marriage portrait dating to c1708/9 when Borrow would have been aged about 36. He purchased Castlefields, a particularly grand provincial baroque house in Derby and was twice Mayor of the town, in 1730 and 1742. A son of this marriage, Thomas Borrow, was Recorder of Derby. His portrait and that of his wife was painted by Joseph Wright of Derby in 1762. Their son, also Thomas, changed the family name to Burrough. Isaac Borrow died in July 1745.
